The School of Engineering and Technology, Kenyatta University and Institute of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering of the University of Natural Sciences and Life Sciences, Vienna are planning for a training workshop to be held at Kenyatta University from the 17 – 21 of February 2014. The workshop is a precursor to a project in the Mara River Basin of Kenya on ‘Exploring Water Resources Planning and Management Options’ led by Dr. Luke Olang and Prof. Josef Fürst.

The workshop aims to build capacity on the applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) on Water Management. The workshop targets relevant post-graduate students and water resource experts from the various organizations in country to enable them explore and use spatial hydrological data and information towards decision support within the today vulnerable river basins of Kenya. Additional information of the workshop can be obtained from the school of Engineering and technology.


Energy Technology Department was established to address energy and environmental issues through training and research. The department focuses on training and research in energy resources, generation, utilization and conversion technologies . We recognize that energy is a dominant development component for any nation or community. For this reason, we appreciate the urgency of developing new energy technologies as well as using the existing resources more efficiently and in a sustainable manner.

Kenya’s vision 2030 places energy among the six main pillars of development. This has resulted to more effort and support from the government and other institutions, which Kenyatta University is part of, to explore and exploit more energy resources, both conventional and renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, bio-energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, hydropower, coal, natural gas and petroleum. With continued increase in the demand and cost of energy in Kenya and around the world, there is now an urgent demand for a well trained workforce to develop, process, utilize and manage conventional, unconventional and renewable energy sources in an environmentally safe and economically feasible way.

Our Energy Technology programmes are designed to develop graduates who will address the national as a well as the global challenges in the energy sector. Graduates from the program will be involved in a wide range of careers that may include: finding the most efficient and sustainable ways to operate buildings and manufacturing processes, energy analysis and auditing, development of renewable energy system and technologies, managing the integration of renewable energy generation into existing power systems, energy systems installation and commissioning, project management, energy consultancy, formulation of future energy policies, among others.

Students wishing to pursue a BSc. Energy Technology program must satisfy the following conditions;
a. The minimum entry requirment for the School of Engineering and Technology.
b. The candidate must have attained the following minimum grades at KCSE or equivalent qualifications;
Mean C+ and in addition attained the following grades:

Physics B+
Chemistry B
Engilish B

MSc. Renewable Energy Technology
Students wishing to pursue a MSc. Renewable Energy Technology program must satisfy the following conditions;
a. Bachelor of science/Bachelor of Education (Science with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) with specialization in appropriate branch of Engineering, Technology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or Biological Sciences)
b. Those with Second Class (Lower Division) may be considered on condition that they attained Grade “C” and above in units relevant to there area of specialization.

PhD. Renewable Energy Technology
Masters Degree in or its equivalent from Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution.


The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering was established in January 2010 under the School of Engineering and Technology in a bid to train more manpower in Computer & Software Engineering. Computer has become a primary tool in all professional fields. Needless to say that computers have made it possible to execute tasks efficiently and much more faster than earlier experienced. It is therefore with the aforesaid in mind that the department endeavors develop skills and manpower in Electrical & Electronics Engineering by producing competent Electrical & Electronics Engineering graduates who are locally and internationally recognized. This is in line with the realization of the government vision of 2030 and the millennium development goals.

The vision of Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering is to develop manpower in the fields of, Electrical & Electronics Engineering by providing excellent training teaching and research at both undergraduate and post graduate level, thus contributing to the development of the country’s Electrical & Electronics sectors.

The objectives of the Department are to:

  • Promote high standards in training, teaching, research and scholarship.
  • Provide manpower needs for Kenya and other countries by offering Universities Education and training areas in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 

African Biomedical Engineering Mobility: building needs-based healthcare technology competencies 


The discipline of biomedical engineering has the potential to play a strong developmental role in Africa by producing graduates skilled in the development of health technologies who can make a contribution towards enhancing healthcare.

In recognition of this, the African Biomedical Engineering Consortium (ABEC; was founded in 2012, with the vision of building and nurturing academic, technical, innovation and entrepreneurship competencies needed to develop a robust and dynamic health technology sector.

The African Biomedical Engineering Mobility (ABEM) programme, herein proposed, will build human and institutional capacity in Africa for needs-based health technology research and development.

The objectives are:

      • To build capacity in biomedical engineering for university lecturers in Africa.
      • To establish a solid task force of African biomedical engineers.
      • To create a platform for sustained cooperation across Africa in research and university teaching in biomedical engineering.
      • To advance Africa’s capacity for health technology innovation.

Participating institutions

  1. Kenyatta University Was the first University to start Biomedical Engineering in Kenya in 2013.
  2. The Center of Biomedical Engineering at Addis Ababa University was established in 2012 and runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  3. The Department of Systems and Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at Cairo University has graduated about 3000 students since its opening 1976 for postgraduate and undergraduate studies.
  4. Mbarara University of Science and Technology has been in existence since 1989.
  5. At the University of Cape Town, the Division of Biomedical Engineering has its origins in the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, which was formed in 1969.
  6. The Department of Biomedical Engineering started in the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1974. It became a full-fledged academic department of the College of Medicine in the 2009/2010 session.
  7. The Research Center “E. Piaggio” of the University of Pisa is one of the oldest multidisciplinary research and technology transfer Centers in Europe, where scientists from different disciplines, ranging from engineering to mathematics, medicine and psychology, converge to combine their expertise and know-how to generate knowledge and provide research and training facilities.

The participating universities collaborate closely with academic hospitals to ensure that their research topics and programmes in biomedical engineering are relevant to local and national health needs, and in some cases are located in medical schools or faculties of health sciences.

Relevance to African government priorities

Governments of the African countries participating as partners in ABEM have prioritised the type of knowledge, capacity and expertise to be generated through ABEM.

  1. Kenya’s Vision 2030 emphasises health in its social pillar, with science, technology and innovation as one of the foundations on which the pillars rest; the vision for the health sector is the creation of a high quality, equitable and affordable health care system.
  2. Uganda’s government policies on Higher Education of Science and Technology, its Vision 2040, and the National Development Plan, promote science, technology, engineering and innovation. South Africa’s National Development Plan - Vision 2030 - emphasises innovation as a driver of technological growth and development, while its Bioeconomy Strategy (2013) has the health objective of supporting development and innovation capabilities to manufacture, among others, “medical devices to address the disease burden”.
  3. The twenty-year Health Sector Development Plan embraced by the Ethiopian government targeting health facility rehabilitation and expansion as well as delivery of quality healthcare, is another good example.
  4. Egypt's Vision 2030 focuses on excellence in health, innovation, and efficiency of governmental medical services, and has the goal of improving national health indicators "through the application of an integrated, accessible, high-quality, and non-discriminatory health system".
  5. The attention to science, technology and innovation, and medical devices, demanded in these strategy documents, is a focus of ABEM. The collaborative research and training promoted through the partnership will align closely with national research and development imperatives. ABEM is responsive to the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme call in the ways outlined below.

The Department of Civil Engineering (ECV) was founded in 2014 to replace the then Department of Water Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology (SET).
The department is currently running one undergraduate programme, namely, Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Civil Engineering. The department is also in the process of developing two post graduate programmes at Masters and Doctorate Levels namely: Master of Science (MSc.) in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Sanitation & Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering Options) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering (Transportation Engineering, Structural & Construction Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Options).
The BSc in Civil Engineering programme has been developed to meet the requirements of Commission for University Education (CUE) and the requirements of the Engineers’ Board of Kenya (EBK), while taking into account the market needs for engineers. The programme is accredited by EBK. The postgraduate courses are being developed to meet the requirements for further learning for a Registered Engineer (REng) for candidates with an accredited BSc(Eng.) (Hons), or BEng(Hons) undergraduate first degree for the MSc program and a relevant MSc(Eng.) or MEng. Degree for the PhD program.
To become a leading centre of excellence for Civil Engineering Education, Training, Research and Practice.
To produce high caliber, skillful, innovative, competent, knowledgeable, morally upright and internationally competitive graduates to serve in the conventional and emerging sectors in Kenya’s Civil Engineering sector and the world and with capability to pursue higher degrees.
Departmental research is in the areas of structural analysis & design, construction materials & technologies, highways and roads, water engineering, geotechnical engineering and water & wastewater treatment technologies.
